For surf fishing I'd get a 10 foot surf rod and a reel big enough for it.The 10 footer is a good summer rod.In the spring and fall it's good to have a 13 footer because you may need to get out there further.I don't like the 12 footers because they are two piece rods instead of three.I think they are to long when you break them down and can be a hassle to store and carry with you.If you look around you can find a cheap rod for around 40 dollars but if your willing to spend about 140 dollars try Kitty Hawk Bait and Tackle in Kitty Hawk(252)261-2955.He's got some custom made Excaliber surf rods one or two piece 9 1/2 footers that will out throw a bigger rod.For reels, your going to get what you pay for with those. The three main brands of spinning reels that are sold here are Penn,Diawa and Silstar. You want to find one that holds a lot of line, you never know if your going to hook something big on it and you might have to give it some line.If your looking for something cheap get a Diawa reel.I never had a problem with the warranty running out if something breaks in it and it's not your fault and I've sent a lot of them back to the factory. If your looking for a reel that will hold up to a lot of use,for around 50 dollars you can get a higher priced model Silstar reel. They hold up better than the cheaper model Penn reels. The cheaper model Silstars are made different and won't hold up good.If you want to spend around 100 dollars for more ball bearings,Penn and Diawa make some good spinning reels. |
